 Before the metric system was common, many engineering companies had their own standard screw sizes. It is driven into the workpiece by a hammer. Teeth are cross-filed to assure that the chisel point is set square to the direction of cutting for best performance. An establishment that is equipped with such tools and specializes in such work is known as a machine shop.

An example of this is the air pressure in a tire of a car, which might be said to be "thirty psi", but is actually thirty psi above atmospheric pressure.
